The first Catholics to settle in the Yarmouth area, who settled at Chebogue, were a group of French inhabitants of Annapolis Royal (Port Royal), around 1739. When writing his History of the County of Yarmouth, in 1876, J.R. Campbell states that there still could be seen remnants of the foundations at both locations. They were attracted by the prospects of good fishing. There was also a settlement of Acadians at Chegoggin, like the one at Chebogue, but it, around the same time, was terminated by the Expulsion of the Acadians in 1755.
